Why broken springs happen

Garage door springs are rated by cycle count — typically 10,000 cycles for a stock spring (5-7 years of normal use). Florida humidity and salt air accelerate the corrosion that weakens the metal, so coastal Broward and Miami-Dade homes often see springs fail closer to year 4. The other big factor: most builders install one spring for two-car doors when there should be two. Single-spring setups put double the load on one piece of metal — guaranteed early failure.

Torsion vs extension — which one snapped?

Torsion springs sit horizontally above the door on a steel shaft. They're the standard for any door over 8 feet wide. Extension springs run vertically along each side track. If your door has springs visible above it, that's torsion. If they run alongside the door, that's extension. Both we replace same-day, but the parts and labor differ: torsion is more common, extension is faster.

Why this is one job NOT to DIY

Torsion springs hold 250+ pounds of stored energy. A wrong move with the winding bars can break wrists, eject teeth, or worse — the ER sees roughly 15,000 garage-spring DIY injuries every year in the US. Worse, an unbalanced door post-install becomes a 200-pound dead weight that crashes when the cable snaps. Our techs use IPPT-certified winding tools and balance the door on every job.

How long the repair takes

Most single-spring jobs are 45-60 minutes from arrival to test cycle. Two-spring (full set) replacement runs 75-90 minutes. We carry the most common spring sizes on the truck (the .250-2.0-25 and .234-1.75-25 cover ~70% of South Florida residential doors), so most calls don't need a parts run.

What we charge — clear and in writing

Standard single-torsion replacement starts with an over-the-phone quote. The price varies based on spring length, wire diameter, and whether you upgrade to high-life springs (a small upcharge, lasts 2-3x longer). Two-spring replacement runs based on scope. Cables and drums add based on scope if they're also worn. You get the written quote before any work begins — no surprises.

Common problems we fix

Door won't open at all

Loud bang then nothing? That's the spring. Don't force the opener — you'll burn out the motor.

Door opens 6 inches then stops

Opener still working but spring is weak. Replace before the cable snaps.

Visible gap or broken spring coil

You can see the break above the door. Don't operate it — call us.
